Sonja Fordham
Shark Conservation Specialist
The Ocean Conservancy
Sonja Fordham serves as the International Fish Conservation Program Manager for the Ocean Conservancy. Sonja has helped TOC achieve significant success in establishing science-based fishing limits for US groundfish, tilefish, sharks and rays, and in banning the wasteful practice of shark finning both domestically and internationally. She has co-authored numerous fish conservation publications and was recently appointed Deputy Chair of the IUCN-World Conservation Union Shark Specialist Group. Sonja received the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council’s Achievement award in 2004 and was named “Environmental Hero” of 2000 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Sonja lobbies tirelessly for sharks and recently helped obtain a unanimous approval by the EU to recommend additional CITES protections for the Atlantic Spiny Dogfish and Porbeagle sharks. Sonja is currently living in Belgium acting as Policy Director for The Shark Alliance and Shark Conservation Program.
